ABOUT SCOPE

"The exchange program offers students a unique educational and cultural experience in addition to the regular medical curriculum. It also helps to broaden the students understanding of medical and social conditions in different countries."

PROFESSIONAL
EXCHANGE
ABOUT PROFESSIONAL EXCHANGE
The Professional Exchange is defined and regulated in the Bylaws of SCOPE. A professional exchange refers to one (unilateral) or two (bilateral) medical students, who undergo a medical practice in a hospital abroad. This practice, named clerkship, is purely educational for the student and he/she will not receive a salary for it.
There are two types of clerkships offered in SCOPE:
1. A pre-clinical clerkship is defined as the stay of a student working or studying in a pre-clinical department at a medical faculty/school or hospital.
2. A clinical clerkship is defined as the stay in a clinical department of a hospital or clinic, or attached to a general practitioner.
Clerkships can be offered in any clinical or pre-clinical field of medicine. The duration of a clerkship is four weeks, but it is possible to extend the duration upon special agreement. Clerkships are given in English and/or in the native language of the country. Academic recognition is available for clerkships varying from country to country. In addition to the medical practice, there are often social and cultural programs available for the student to participate in. During the period of a bilateral exchange, the exchange student is supplied with food and lodging by the hosting country.
As a summary, students participating in exchanges will receive:
1- One Month Clerkship (either clinical or pre-clinical)
2- Lodging (at a students’ facility or hosting family)
3- Boarding (at least one meal per working day at a student’s facility or cafeteria)
4- Social Program (may be free depending on the Local Committee)
5- Incoming Student Package (to be developed in a later section)
6- Student’s Handbook (to be developed in a later section)
